Kauffman Summer Legal Institute
The Kauffman Summer Legal Institute is headed down a new path again this year.
In the past, the Kauffman Summer Legal Institute (KSLI) brought together leading legal and economic researchers to discuss cutting-edge research on topics related to "law, innovation, and growth." The conferences strived to develop a research agenda to advance the understanding of law and policies on this important topic.
Last year, our mission was to define ways to improve the legal landscape to encourage innovation and economic growth. Rather than invite presentations by those actively researching our main theme, instead we invited select members of the growing KSLI fraternity to work together to write, in advance of the conference, a draft document that resulted in the acclaimed Rules for Growth.
We expect the results of this year’s gathering will be just as noteworthy! Our focus will be on developing ways law and policy can be changed to encourage more cost-saving innovation in the U.S. health care system. There should be no explanation necessary as to why we are emphasizing cost-saving innovation, especially at this critical juncture in the nation's history with the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Our central purpose for the July 2011 conference will not only be to debate legal and policy changes, but also to develop the outline of a White Paper that Kauffman will subsequently publish in winter 2011 or early 2012.
